Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct

Purpose
The Rockland Skating Club ("the Club") is committed to providing a safe, respectful, inclusive, and positive environment where every skater has the opportunity to learn, grow, and enjoy the sport of skating.
Parents and guardians play a vital role in supporting the development of our athletes and helping foster a culture of respect, sportsmanship, and Safe Sport. This Code of Conduct outlines the expectations for all parents and guardians whose children participate in Club programs.
This policy supports and complements the Skate Canada Code of Ethics, Skate Ontario Code of Conduct, and all applicable Safe Sport policies.
Parent/Guardian Expectations
As a parent or guardian of a Rockland Skating Club participant, I agree to:
1. Promote Respect
· Treat all skaters, coaches, officials, volunteers, Board members, arena staff, and families with courtesy, kindness, dignity, and respect.
· Support an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and free from discrimination, bullying, intimidation, harassment, or abuse.
· Remember that every child deserves encouragement and respect regardless of ability or results.
2. Support My Skater Positively
· Encourage my child to work hard, have fun, and demonstrate good sportsmanship.
· Celebrate effort, improvement, and personal achievement.
· Never ridicule, embarrass, or criticize my child or another skater for mistakes or performances.
· Encourage my child to respect coaches, officials, and fellow skaters.
3. Respect Coaches
· Allow coaches to coach.
· Refrain from coaching, instructing, or criticizing skaters from the stands or boards.
· Respect the professional relationship between coaches and skaters.
· Avoid interrupting lessons or discussions during ice sessions except in emergencies.
4. Respect Officials and Volunteers
· Respect the decisions of coaches, officials, evaluators, judges, and Club volunteers.
· Understand that volunteers generously give their time to support our Club.
· Communicate disagreements respectfully and through appropriate channels.
5. Communicate Professionally
I will:
· Speak respectfully with coaches, Board members, volunteers, and other parents.
· Address concerns privately and constructively.
· Avoid confrontational behaviour at the arena, competitions, Club events, or online.
· Help resolve disagreements in a respectful manner.
6. Support Safe Sport
I understand that everyone shares responsibility for creating a safe environment.
I will:
· Help maintain a Safe Sport environment free from bullying, harassment, discrimination, intimidation, abuse, and violence.
· Report safety concerns or inappropriate behaviour through the appropriate reporting channels.
· Never retaliate against someone who raises a concern in good faith.
7. Use Social Media Responsibly
I agree to:
· Communicate respectfully online.
· Avoid posting negative, abusive, defamatory, or inflammatory comments about skaters, coaches, officials, volunteers, Board members, or families.
· Respect the privacy of all participants.
· Recognize that online behaviour reflects on both my family and the Club.
8. Respect the Arena and Ice Sessions
I will:
· Follow all arena and Club rules.
· Remain off the ice unless specifically invited by a coach or Club representative.
· Respect restricted areas including coaches' spaces and dressing rooms.
· Help keep the facility clean and safe.
9. Support Club Operations
I understand that Rockland Skating Club is a volunteer-run organization.
I will:
· Honour volunteer commitments where applicable.
· Follow Club registration, payment, and program policies.
· Support Club fundraising and events whenever possible.
· Help create a welcoming environment for new families.
Failure to Comply
The Rockland Skating Club is committed to maintaining a respectful and safe environment for everyone.
Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in action by the Club, which may include:
· Informal discussion
· Verbal warning
· Written warning
· Meeting with the Board of Directors
· Temporary suspension from Club activities
· Removal from Club events
· Suspension or termination of Club membership where warranted
The level of action taken will depend on the severity and frequency of the behaviour and will be consistent with applicable Club, Skate Ontario, and Skate Canada policies.
Parents are expected to model the behaviour we hope to see in our skaters. Respect, patience, kindness, and sportsmanship should guide all interactions at practices, competitions, Club events, and online.
Parent/Guardian Acknowledgement
I acknowledge that I have read and understand the Rockland Skating Club Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct.
I agree to conduct myself in a respectful manner that supports a safe, inclusive, and positive skating environment for all participants.
I understand that failure to comply with this Code may result in disciplinary action by the Rockland Skating Club in accordance with Club, Skate Ontario, and Skate Canada policies.
I have read and agree to the Rockland Skating Club Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct.
